Billabong Grom Comp Report

The Grom Comp was an amazing success! Young surfers from all across the Emerald Coast gathered for a day of fun and friendly competition. The under 8 division was stacked five heats deep for the first round and displayed some amazing up and coming talent. The three foot seas provided some chest high peaks for the little ones…just enough to challenge but not so big as to frighten. We saw dozens of rides from the outside bar all the way to the sandy beach. In the older divisions we saw some advanced skills, working the faces, pumping for speed, several switch foot spin arounds and one ride with not one but two completed handstands!
The kids celebrated with trophies, champagne (sparkling grape juice) showers, and a giant prize money check for One Gazillion dollars!
Here is a link to pictures taken by the local paper.

Thank you Billabong for making this event happen. I hope it’s just the start of more good events to come!
Billabong Grom Comp Saturday!
This Saturday our local Billabong store is hosting a “Grom Comp” surf contest just for kids.
Yours truly, will be the Master of Ceremonies for the contest and “Official Pusher” for my own 7 year old and soon to be surfing champion, Dylan Sturdivant.
There will be three age divisions…8 & under, 10 & under, 12 & under.
This is a “push in” contest so parents participate and push the kids into their waves. (we have some volunteers to help if your child needs a pusher. Surfboards can also be available, just indicate when registering if you will be borrowing a board or needing help)
Where: The new Beach Park in Miramar, next to Pompano Joe’s
When: Saturday, May 16th 9:00 am
Entry: $15 (t-shirt and Goodie bags included)
Advanced registration ends today! Stop by the Billabong store in Grand Blvd to sign up. Day of event registration is limited to space available so arrive early (8am) for the best chance of getting in the contest!
We are sure to have a great time and hope to see some of our Blue Mountain Surf School graduates bring home trophies!
Surfrider Beach Clean-Up Mothers Day!

Join Surfrider this Sunday for a quick beach clean-up.
Ma Ocean will really appreciate it, and you will enjoy it too!
We’ll meet at the Ed Walline beach access (directly across from Gulf Place on hwy 30-A).

Hope to see you there!
If you can’t make it, she’ll still love you!
-and, we’ll see you on the second Sunday of every month this summer… clean-up locations to be announced.
2009 YOLO SUP Race #1 Results
The 2009 Yolo Board Stand Up Paddle Board Race Series is off to a fantastic start!
We had an amazing turnout for the first race of the series. A little math to get started… 14 four man teams plus 9 four woman teams equals One Gazillion Paddlers on Oyster Lake tonight! (OK, so that’s actually 92 competitors, but you get the picture)
South Walton served up another fantastic evening on the water as a southerly sea breeze kept temperatures comfortable and pushed all the racers down wind on their initial leg. The return leg was upwind and helped to separate the weekend warriors from the seasoned athletes. One of the beautiful things about this sport though, is that even last place is still enjoyable (just ask “Shrek” of the Jambone team, he was smiling big as he came across the line well after the leaders were celebrating on dry land)
The results from race #1 of the YOLO SUP series are as follows:
Ladies Results
1-On the Coast Magazine (winning time was 19:41)
2-Balance Health Studio (20:01)
3-Kitty Hawk Kites “Piranahs” (20:06)
4-Big Daddy’s Bike Shop “Bun’s in the Sun”
5-Team “Unbalanced”
6-Amavida Coffee
7-World Six Botique

Men’s Results:

2-Destin Lifeguards (23:30)
3-South Walton Lifeguards (Gold) (23:39)
4-Destin Health & Fitness (24:14)
5-Billabong (25:18)
6-Wells Fargo Advisors (25:34)

8-New Orchard Group (25:39)
9-Sunset Beach Service (25:41)

11-Sandestin (26:51)
12-Tops’l (28:03)
13-Copy Systems (31:00)
14-Jambone (40:52)
The heat is on…looks like several teams are serious about a fight for the YOLO Board Series Championship. And, at least one team has some serious issues (read -leotards and watersports don’t mix!) Fortunately for the members of team Jambone, I will gladly trade one intensive psychotherapy session for a tasty beef brisket sandwich…I’ll see you in my office at the Destin Counseling Center!
Watch this space for pictures to be posted soon.
Please e-mail any good shots you may have from the race. We will be glad to post them here and include them in this years post season slide show!
