Say Hello Dolly!
Hello Dolly! Here comes our first shot at some tropical swell in the Gulf this season. The projected path is just about a best case scenario for our area. If it will just slow down a bit and camp off the tip of the Yucatan for a day or two we’ll be sure to have some excellent ground swell. Wax ‘em up and start coughing at work but don’t ask for the sick day till it gets a little closer.

Team Aqua Paddles to Victory in Race One!
The YOLO Paddle Board Race was going off last night! With more teams, more spectators, music, and fanfare, the event is taking on a life and providing a great opportunity for folks who love the outdoors to just get together and enjoy. Ma nature helped too by throwing up another spectacular sunset.

The men from Aqua Surf Shop earned top honors. Arriving just a few minutes late, they got held over to a third heat of racing. Racing with fewer head to head teams would seem to be a disadvantage, but they pushed themselves and racing against the clock delivered the fastest time of the event. Congratulations Team Aqua!
Equally impressive to me was the great showing of Ladies for this event. With the YOLO Women and the team formerly known as Waterbugs now Walton Wahines (much more flattering) demonstrating that fun is an equal opportunity experience.
On that note, there were plenty of kids checking out the scene and showing their skill paddle boarding. They were frequently riding tandem and even trandem? I think we’ll have to open up a category just for the kids!
For more information see the YOLO press release.
The next race is just a couple weeks away. We’ll keep you posted. Don’t miss it!

YOLO Board Announces Stand-Up Paddle Series Race Event
Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.-based paddleboard company hosts race series event to celebrate growing water sport activity
Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. (July 8, 2008) – YOLO Board LLC announces the inaugural YOLO Board Stand-Up Paddle Series race event that will kick off on Thursday, July 17th at 6 pm at Oyster Lake in Santa Rosa Beach. At least 12 four-member teams will compete in a series of five races (three heats per race) that will take place at different locations spanning two months as race paddlers vie for the champion title “YOLO Board Cup Series†to be awarded after the final race in September.
“On the heels of the success of the recent Surfrider SUP race we were inspired to create the first ever YOLO Board Stand-Up Paddle Series race event,†said Jeff Archer, co-founder of YOLO Board LLC. “Our goal for this event is to help contribute to the culture of the local beach community by providing a fun avenue to bring people together while celebrating the world’s fastest growing recreational water sport.â€
Tentative race dates (weather permitting) are: July 17th, July 31st, August 14th, August 28th, and September 18th. A one time race entry fee is $150 per team. Free signature race series t-shirts will be provided for each participating team member and YOLO boards will be available for use at each race event.
Additional race divisions will include individual men’s, individual women’s and parent/child to name a few. All events are free and open to the public.
