In celebration of the upcoming International Surfing Day (June 20th), we are calling upon Stand-Up Paddlers to enjoy an evening of fun!

Friday, June 13th at 6pm there will be excitement for paddlers and spectators alike, as several teams comprised of surf shop, lifeguard, and other beach business crews duke it out for top honors. Ma-Ocean will be the big winner as teams will also try to improve their times by offering up donations. Each dollar raised will shave a second off the clock! The donations will help the Surfrider Foundation keep our oceans clean and accessible for everyone! www.surfrider.org

Four person teams will paddle a team SUP board in a total of eight laps around the lake, handing off the board to a team mate every two laps. The board exchanges will surely be fun to watch!

The event will be held on a beautiful coastal dune lake and in full view of passers by along scenic 30-A. Watch this page for event details as the race day draws closer.

Yolo Board has offered to provide SUP boards for all teams…allowing for head to head one design competition! Also, if you have always wanted to try paddle boarding come out for a free demo before the race, 5-6pm!

As of 6/3/08 the following teams are slated to participate:

Team Brah Ha Surf Shop

Team SWFD Lifeguards (two teams, Ladies and Men’s)

Team Aqua Surf Shop

Team Surfrider

Team YOLO Board

Team R.Y.N.O.

Team Surf & Skim

Team Sandestin Beach & Golf

Awards:
Presented on International Surfing Day, Friday June 20th, 7pm Pompano Joe’s (Team donations will be accepted until 6:30pm)

Team Champion (overall time after adjustment of 1 second per every $1 in donations)
Best Individual Leg (2 lap straight time, no adjustment)

UPDATE: New location!!! New Start Time!!!

Great news! The Paddle Board Race is drawing lots of interest. We have several more teams planning to compete. Allen Lake will not be big enough to hold us all! The event will be moved to Oyster Lake with better access and more parking. Parking is located along 30-A, at the beach access, and on the North side of Lake Causeway. (Do not block bike path or private drives.) Click photo for larger image.

With the additional teams, it will be necessary for the race to be run in two or more heats, with an earlier start time of 6:00 pm. The 7:00 pm heat will still be reserved for those teams such as our lifeguards, beach crews, and surf shops that can only attend after closing up shop or beach operations. If your team can’t arrive for a 5:30 pm pre-race meeting, please contact me to secure a 7:00 pm start time. Otherwise, assume that your race will run at 6:00 pm. We have had a few individuals and partial teams interested…arrive early and we will attempt to pair you up with others to make a team! Please contact me so I can better plan for your participation.

The individual race will be separate in the final heat of the day…standing start…straight up race to the finish line…winner takes all the glory! Anyone who participates in the team event is eligible for the solo race.

Hope to see you there. You can reach me via the Blue Mountain Surf Contact page.

CATCH A WAVE ON INTERNATIONAL SURFING DAY

Surfers Worldwide Unite To Celebrate Surfing and Coastal Environments

San Clemente, CA (May 8, 2008) – On June 20, 2008, surfers from around the world will wax their surfboards and catch a wave in honor of International Surfing Day (ISD).

However there will be a new twist this year in the form of special ISD “challenges” whereby the public will be able to compete for prizes by participating in a wide range of activities ranging from beach clean-ups, to filmmaking, to art contests.

International Surfing Day is sponsored by Monster Energy Drink, Pac Sun and Earthpack.

John Cross–ESA Contest at Okaloosa Island Pier.

We had a fun Memorial Day holiday:

1. Waves all weekend.

2. Humpback whale spotted 1 mile off the beach. The article and photos are here.

3. A 6am wakeup call for me on Sunday to help save a guy that had gotten caught in a rip while taking a morning swim. His friend was screaming on the beach for help and woke up everyone in the whole area. Everyone was just standing around half-asleep and with no equipment on the beach to help. I ran down there with my board but the guy saved himself before I got there. The paramedics took it from there.

4. Mike, Jill, and I caught some waves in the outrigger kayak.

5. Mike and John surfed against each other in the final of an ESA surf contest at the Okaloosa Island Pier. (Mike took 1st place; John took 2nd place.)
